Tight security for DUSU polls

Staff Reporter

755 EVMs will be used at 120 booths across 52 colleges today

NEW DELHI: As Delhi University goes to the polls on Friday to elect its new student leaders it will be a nervous weekend for the 44 contesting candidates.

For the first time the University will be using electronic voting machines (EVM) designed specifically to suit the needs of the students' union polls. Also, elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure that the polling exercise is conducted peacefully.

"To ensure peaceful polling on Friday, security has be tightened and Delhi Police, Rapid Action Force and Central Reserve Police Force officials have been deployed. Sensitive centres including women's hostels will have additional police force,'' said Delhi University Proctor and Chief Election Officer Gurmeet Singh.

The first phase of polling will be from 8-30 a.m. to 12-30 p.m. and for evening colleges it will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. As many as 755 EVMs will be used at 120 booths across 52 colleges.

Counting will begin on Saturday and results are expected to be out by 10 a.m.

"We have also concluded the training of staff who would be operating the EVMs. Earlier we were using as many as 600 people for the counting process, which used to take over five hours. However, this time round we have asked for 20 people to help us in the counting process and the results should be out in an hour,'' said Mr. Singh.

On Thursday, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) took out a rally from Kalkaji to North Campus.

Meanwhile, members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a protest demonstration on Thursday evening demanding that strict action be taken against the NSUI candidates for allegedly distributing liquor.

Nakul Bhardwaj of ABVP said: "We are demanding that the guilty candidates shown to be distributing liquor by a private channel be barred from contesting.''

Reacting to the ABVP demand, Mr. Singh said: "We will examine the matter and do the needful.''
