This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru has observed that parliamentary traditions were meant to be observed as much outside as inside the Houses of Parliament. Unveiling a portrait of the late Speaker, Mr. G.V. Mavlankar, in the Central Hall of Parliament on September 7, Mr. Nehru said Mavlankar had helped to build up good parliamentary conventions. "In doing so, he trained all of us, kept us in check and occasionally chided us, but whenever he chided us, he did so in a friendly way. That created the atmosphere appropriate to Parliament, an atmosphere of friendliness, co-operation, courtesy and restraint. This is a tremendous thing, and if we maintain it, most of our problems, however difficult they might be, will become easier of solution." The Speakership, Mr. Nehru said, was a high and important position. Some were born into it, some grew into it and some were pushed into it. Mr. Mavlankar was almost born into it. He fitted into it, as the glove would fit the hand.
