This Day That Age
C.B. Fry, the "Grand Old Man of English Cricket," died in London on September 7, aged 84. Charles Burgess Fry was respected throughout the British Commonwealth as a great cricketer, but he was also one of the most gifted intellectuals and sporting all-rounders Britain has ever produced. Among the many tributes paid to Fry was one by F.E. Woolley, the former England all-rounder, who recalled a typical sporting gesture that Fry made. Woolley said: "I remember once bowling to him on a sticky wicket when the ball was turning a lot. I beat him several times in one over without getting his wicket. Next over, to my surprise, he demonstrated that I was not pitching the ball on the right spot and it was going over the stumps. That was typical of him." In cricket Fry will always be remembered in conjunction with Prince K.S. Ranjitsinhji. Playing for Sussex at the turn of the century they dominated even the Golden Age of English batsmanship much as Edrich and Compton did in the recent comparative lesser days.
