Documenting the fluvial source of life

Rivers, in modern times, are facing extreme stress. Not many are flowing quietly these days. This makes the effort made by Moozhikulam Sala to document information about 44 rivers in the State relevant.

The sala is bringing out special editions of Sraddha, its wall magazine, on rivers as part of the ongoing 30-day music festival. "These editions will include all geographical details of rivers like their place of origin, where they meet the sea and their capacity," said T.R. Premkumar of Moozhikulam Sala.

The special editions will also feature the environmental problems faced by them. Finally, landmarks, either historically or culturally, placed along banks of each of the rivers will be documented. "That will connect the rivers to the contemporary times," he said.

The 30-day music festival, which began on August 18, was dedicated to child artist Clint, music critic M.K. Balagopal, floutist Sachin Kaitharam, fading practice of agriculture and waning rivers. Each day is dedicated to one of the 44 rivers and to seeds of one of the vegetable cultivated here.

The sala, earlier, brought out Sankranti special editions. That was spread over a week starting from July 17. Then, the subjects of special issues were different life forms that existed around us and make our life meaningful.

Each issue of this special edition were on termites, honeybees, earthworms, elephants, ants, crows and frogs. "Of these, except earthworm and frog, all other creatures have elaborate social lives. These two were selected for their roles in helping traditional farmers," Mr. Premkumar said.

Done in a neutral, dispassionate tone, these write-ups gave an overview about the lifecycle of these creatures.
