BAGALORE: Nortel has said that it will significantly enhance its procurement from India and China to serve the booming telecom market in Asia.

Nortel is looking at increasing product procurement and research and development outsourcing apart from services, John B. Haydon, Chief Procurement Officer, Nortel, told reporters here on Friday.

Wipro was one of the top 100 partners for Nortel and the two have joined hands to take up projects directly. Bharati Telecom was one such example. Nortel was managing the technology part of Bharati's networks.

Wipro Product Engineering Solutions President Ramesh Emani said Nortel was one of the top ten customers of Wipro. More than 1,000 Wiproites were working for Nortel projects, he said.

Nortel and Wipro Technologies on Friday celebrated 15 successful years of collaboration in developing and supporting next generation products for service providers and enterprise customers worldwide. This marks the establishment of one of the first off-shore development centres in India in 1991, dedicated to telecommunications R&D. Wipro now provides end-to-end design, system integration, consulting, software release management and support for Nortel's carrier and enterprise product lines, as well as a multi-site and geographically dispersed engineering services delivery model.

"Wipro's robust processes, in-depth telecommunications knowledge, R&D expertise and product engineering skills have made Wipro a highly valued supplier over the past 15 years,'' Mr. Haydon said.
