Arms seizure: Tamil Nadu police launch inquiry
Tamil Nadu Bureau
CHENNAI:
With the receipt of information that the illegal consignment of weaponry had been transported from here, the Tamil Nadu Police on Friday began enquiries.
A senior police officer told The Hindu that the police had received information through a reliable channel that the weapons had gone from a godown at Ambattur on the outskirts of Chennai.
Despatched months ago
The weapons were said to have been despatched nearly four months ago. A team had rushed to Ambattur to make enquiries.
Police sources said the consignments were sent to Andhra Pradesh from the Ambattur Industrial Estate on different dates a few months ago.
26 consignments
Initial investigations revealed that 26 consignments were sent from three transport operators who have offices in Royapettah and Sowcarpet. Of the 26 consignments, two had been full lorry loads.
Highly-placed intelligence sources said police teams had fanned out to different areas to check whether the transport operators had any role to play in the alleged transfer of the consignments and, if so, for how long.
