Need for safety net

The death of 50 miners in the Bhatdih coal mine of Dhanbad, caused by inhaling carbon monoxide following an underground explosion, reinforces the need for effective safety measures in our coalfields. The Government is concerned only with the revenue generated from coal extraction, not with the safety of workers.

The authorities seem to have learnt nothing from the mine disasters of the past. Excessive exploitation of natural resources is one of the causes of such tragedies. The inquiries that follow such accidents invariably resemble cover-up exercises. It is time to set long-term policies for mining and put an effective safety net in place.

Nakshab Khan,
Aligarh, U.P.
