KOZHIKODE: The financial assistance announced by Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss recently for the modernisation of the Institute of Maternal and Child Health (IMCH) here is expected to give a total facelift to this wing of the Medical College Hospital. Kozhikode Medical College Principal P.V. Ramachandran said the sum of Rs.50 crore allotted for restructuring the IMCH was expected to provide all-round improvement. The funding was being provided under the aegis of the National Rural Health Mission for the institute, involved in the care of mothers and newborns. The modernisation project envisaged for the IMCH included the construction of an additional building, operation theatres, blood bank and intensive care unit. The project plan was prepared by IMCH superintendent M.K. Mohan Kumar and deputy superintendent T.P. Ashraf. "The main handicaps facing the institute are space crunch, lack of equipment and shortage of staff," Dr. Ashraf said. The bed strength would be increased to a considerable extent besides doubling the staff strength at the institute, where on an average 1,200 patients were given treatment a day. State-of-the-art laboratories, installing generators, modern waste treatment plant were the other improvements planned for the hospital. Facilities for research and higher studies were also envisaged as part of the improvement programme. The medical college authorities had earlier submitted a Rs.30-crore proposal to the Centre for improving facilities at the hospital.
