KOTTAYAM: The 22nd annual conference and continuing education programme of the Indian Psychiatric Society (Kerala branch) began at Munnar on Friday. The seminar would take a close look at the increasing number of suicides in the State, its president, V.K. Radhakrishnan, told mediapersons here. Speaking to media persons, Dr Radhakrishnan said that the seminar will take a close look at the increasing number of suicides in the state. The society has instituted studies in to the issue and preliminary data shows that the rise of consumerism, abetted by globalisation process played a crucial role in the emerging trend. The increased expectations and the failure to get adjusted with the changing lifestyles too have contributed to the trend, he said. The wide media coverage such suicides get, too may induce the borderline cases to take to the extreme step. According to him, the conference will discuss the issue in the light of the studies taken up by Dr. V Satheesh and Dr. P N Suresh Kumar on the farmer suicides in Idukki and Wynad districts. The theme of this year's seminar will be ' the Role of Family in the Mental Health of Children'. Shobha Sreenath, (NIMHANS) will deliver the keynote address on the theme. Sreepathy Bhatt, Venkitesh Ramachandran and B Raghunath, will present papers. Dr. Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the programme.
