Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: A senior Congress leader on strict anonymity pointed out when contacted by this Correspondent on Friday that any decision on converting JIPMER into an autonomous institution should be preceded by consultation with the employees and staff of the institute. The leader said the issue had been cropping in fits and starts for some years now and every time the issue arose there was protest and agitation by the employees in this 50-year-old institution. Before taking a decision, the views of the employees should be ascertained, he opined. He did not want to come out with any comments, as the issue was sensitive. A delegation of the JIPMER staff attached to the committee protesting the Centre's decision reportedly held a meeting on Friday with the Chief Minister seeking the intervention of the Government to prevent the conversion. It has been the intention of the Centre to bring JIPMER on par with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.
