Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The General Secretary of Pondicherry unit of AITUC, V.S. Abishegam, expressed strong protest against the "move" of the Industrial Development Corporation (PIPDIC) to sell industrial estates' lands belonging to the Corporation to private entrepreneurs. In a release here on Friday, Mr. Abishegam said that industrial estates were created for rapid industrialisation of Pondicherry and to provide job opportunities to unemployed youth. When a move was made in 2005 by the Corporation to sell the sites to private entrepreneurs, all the trade unions were up in arms against it and the whole plan was subsequently abandoned. The administration had also held out a firm assurance then that no part of the estate would slip into the hands of private players. Now a move seemed to be made again to the detriment of workers attached to units. He feared once the sites became the properties of private entrepreneurs there would be scope for construction of shopping complexes. Mr. Abishegam said his organisation would mobilise the support of like-minded unions to launch an extensive agitation.
