Police officer warns of stringent action against road rokos

Special Correspondent

"It is an indecent way of showing discontent"

CUDDALORE: Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar has warned of stringent action against those, who are staging road rokos. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said road roko was an indecent way of showing discontent.

On flimsy grounds and at the instigation of anti-social elements, certain sections used to block road traffic thereby causing inconvenience to others. They were doing so at the drop of the hats and without any prior intimation to the law-enforcing authorities. Therefore, to curb such a trend it had been decided to book those indulging in road rokos under Section 7 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law Amendment Act. He further said the violators of traffic rules would also be severely dealt with.

Road safety

In the past eight months there were 259 fatal road accidents in the district, and therefore, to bring down the rate of accident it had been decided to cancel the driving licences of those causing deaths on the roads.

Mr. Sanjay Kumar attributed the accidents mainly to non-adherence of traffic rules and scant regard to safety norms. He said the community policing in the district would be strengthened by the formation of Village Vigilance Committees, each comprising 50 members.

The police should project the image that they were people-friendly, Mr. Sanjay Kumar said.

He sought people's cooperation in checking as well as detecting crimes. Twelve permanent check-posts had been set up to check liquor peddling and illegal sand transportation, and those who would be arrested in such cases would be detained under the Goondas Act, he noted.

Of the 39 murder cases reported during this year, 38 were detected; of the 294 robbery and theft cases, 247 were detected, and a case of idol theft had been referred to the CB-CID, Mr. Sanjay Kumar added.
