Pondicherry: Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) Parliamentary Party leader M. Ramadoss said here in a release on Friday that the Union Cabinet had approved of the Rs.542 crore canal transport scheme to link Pondicherry with Kakinada. He said that transport of cargo would increase and this scheme would be of help in the context of the upcoming Special Economic Zone in Pondicherry. The total distance to be covered under the system would be around 1,095 km. He said that the Union Road Transport and Shipping Minister, T.R. Baalu, had consented to the proposal presented before him for the development of bridges and other infrastructures to link Union Territory with major cities. Boats and medium sized cargo ships would carry the goods from here to distant pockets. He said that while in the 10th annual plan as much as Rs. 8 crore would be earmarked and in the 11th plan the remaining amount of Rs.534 crore would be allocated for the project. Necessary legislation in this regard would be introduced and adopted in the winter session of Parliament, the PMK leader added. Once this materialised, the raw materials needed for the industries in the Union Territory could be procured and finished goods could also be lifted to other parts of the country. Thus the economic growth and also the upcoming Special Economic Zone would be pick up fast here. He thanked the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the AICC leader Sonia Gandhi and the Union Minister T.R. Baalu for their response to the representation made in this regard for transport and infrastructure development.
