EYE DONATION DAY: Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi releases the campaign material on eye donation, brought out by Jothi Eye Care Centre, at Raj Nivas on Friday.

Pondicherry: Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi has said that a joint campaign by Departments of Health and Education would go a long way to generate awareness among the people on the importance and necessity of eye donation.

During an informal chat with newsmen during the release of stickers and posters brought out by Pondicherry-based Jothi Eye Care Centre and Jothi Eye Bank on eye donation at Raj Nivas here on Friday, the Lt. Governor said that any superstition hampering donation and transplant of eyes should be removed through sustained campaign. Mr. Mithi also insisted that necessary infrastructure, if not available already, should be created in Government hospitals in the form of eye banks so that more and more people could come forward to donate their eyes.

He said that voluntary organisations like Jothi Eye Care centre were concentrating to associate school children in the form of rallies and other spadework to generate awareness among the people. Posters and stickers, the eye care centre had brought out, would be displayed on the passenger buses operating within and between Pondicherry and neighbouring State, according to the Director, Jothi Eye Care Centre, Vanaja Vaithianathan. She earlier said the release of the posters marked the celebration of the National Eye Donation day on Friday.

The president of Pondicherry Bus Operators' Association, P. Kannan, and its secretaries K. Dhandapani and Govindaraj were also present.
