Left demands action against officials

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Expressing grief at the death of 54 coalminers in Jharkhand, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday demanded action against officials allegedly responsible for the accident. They also urged strict observation of safety rules by Coal India so that such accidents did not recur.

"The management of the Bharat Coking Coal Limited is responsible for a gross violation of safety rules which has resulted in the mishap. Though the mine was known to be gaseous, the local officials failed to take precautionary steps provided in the mine safety regulations. The pressure of the gas became extremely high which led to the explosion and trapping of miners who died instantly," the party Polit Bureau said in a statement.

In a separate statement, the CPI demanded a thorough probe into the incident and said those who were guilty of not following the safety norms should be punished. The party Central Secretariat also demanded that the affected families be adequately compensated.
