KURNOOL: The General Hospital and Medical Department will conduct special medical camps for children to screen them for heart diseases at four places in the district. The camp will be conducted at Kurnool on September 10, Nandyal on September 17, Allagadda September 25 and Adoni October 1. Talking to reporters on Friday, Superintendent of Hospital Anjaiah, DMHO Ramakrishna Reddy and Head of Department of Cardiology P. Chandrasekhar said that children below 12 years would be screened at the camps. Those with defects would be referred to specialised institutions for surgery under the Government programme. Dr. Chandrasekhar said since the programme was launched in 2004, a total of 488 cases were detected and referred to the institutions. Of them, 293 cases were from Kurnool district. He said majority of the cases were Ventricular Septal Defect and Arterial Septal Defect. Complex congenital heart diseases were noticed in 97 children who required multiple surgeries. He said fifty per cent of the cases could be treated locally if cath lab and open-heart surgery facilities were set up in the hospital with an investment of Rs. 4 crores.
