VIJAYAWADA: The biggest arms haul by Andhra Pradesh police, which seized 600 rocket launchers in Mahabubnagar district on Friday, had a link to Vijayawada as the city-based Kranti Transport's truck was used for the transhipment. Speaking to The Hindu , Kranti Transport official L.V. Prasad said that the consignment was booked at Chennai for Mahabubnagar. "We are verifying the documents of the consignment. It will be a Herculean task for the transport companies to check each and every consignment and we go by the declaration of goods while the consignment is booked. However, we are strictly following the Government rule by not accepting banned goods like firearms, sulphur, gelatine sticks and inflammable objects," he added.
Fresh guidelines soon
He said, never in the history of transport sector, did an unforeseen incident like this take place and said the management was planning to evolve a set of stringent rules to prevent such occurrences in the future. "We will be issuing fresh guidelines to all our agents across the country shortly," he added. Meanwhile, as part of the raids conducted by police in all the Kranti Transport's offices in the State, Vijayawada police conducted surprise checks in all the offices of Kranti Transport. The consignment first reached Vijayawada on May 9 and it was transhipped to Mahabubnagar on May 13.
