On a different pitch

NEW DELHI: A master opening batsman who has also donned the Indian cricket cap several times, Gautam Gambhir once again did what he is best at -- opening. Only, this time he was inaugurating the Junior Proclamation Ceremony of Indian School here.

During the programme, prizes and certificates were given to the meritorious students for their all-round performance in the academic year 2005-06. A cultural show was presented by students of junior classes for the star cricketer.

News for BP patients

NEW DELHI: Blood pressure patients who are administered a mix of modern blood pressure drugs are less likely to develop diabetes than those on older pills, said Dr. K.K. Aggarwal, president of Heart Care Foundation of India, here on Friday.

Quoting from a new analysis of Europe's biggest-ever study of hypertension patients, Dr. Aggarwal said eight per cent of the patients who were given new medicines developed diabetes after five years against 11.4 per cent of those on older drugs. "Older beta-blockers should no longer be preferred for initial therapy as they restrict blood flow to muscles, making it more difficult for the body to metabolise glucose."
