BJP can provide good governance: Vajpayee

C.K. Chandramohan

DEHRA DUN: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday launched its pre-election exercise in Uttaranchal, which goes to the polls early next year, with the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, calling upon the people to vote for his party as it could deliver the good governance needed for all-round development.

Speaking at the Parivartan Rally at the Parade Grounds here, Mr. Vajpayee attacked the Congress Government for having slowed development of the State through mismanagement and corruption.

Mr. Vajpayee wanted the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre to continue the peace process with Pakistan without compromising on security.

"Today's incident at Malegaon along with other killings in Mumbai and Jammu and Kashmir speak of a total intelligence failure and the Prime Minister would do good by revamping and fully utilising the intelligence agencies," he said.

L.K. Advani said the BJP had facilitated the birth of Uttaranchal, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

"I am pained to see the total chaos in Uttaranchal and want you to vote us to power in the ensuing polls and I promise that with leaders like B.C. Khanduri, the party will be able to develop Uttaranchal into a vibrant economy," he said.

Mr. Advani said the people should realise that the present Congress was not the same that had secured independence, but was a group of people who were not even interested in respecting `Vande Mataram.'

BJP president Rajnath Singh said the Government should tell Pakistan that friendly relations could be possible only when terrorist camps in that country were wiped out. If need be, India should be ready to help Pakistan wipe out the terror modules, he said.

It may be mentioned that nearly fifty percent of the crowd had left the venue before Mr Advani or Mr Vajpayee could speak.
