CHENNAI: A comprehensive insurance cover for HIV/AIDS-affected persons will be introduced soon. The policy will be chalked out either with the help of a corpus fund created specially for this purpose or work out a scheme with insurance companies, according to the Project Director of Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), Supriya Sahu. Inaugurating a two-day residential refresher training programme for HIV positive people in the State here on Friday, Ms. Sahu said a meeting had been scheduled for September 19 to help formulate the insurance scheme for them. She said plans were afoot to formulate a scheme to involve women self-help groups in not only creating awareness among the masses but establishing a wider village-level coverage. The Government, she said, was also planning to start 1,000 more Red Ribbon Clubs in different parts of the State during this year. While the Government has chalked out a three-pronged strategy to protect people from getting infected with AIDS, Ms. Sahu said the Government was more concerned over orphan children and widows afflicted with AIDS. In this context, she said TANSACS was planning to rope in the services of its legal adviser and other experts to sort out the legal issues relating to properties of widows. She urged the Tamil Nadu Network of Positive People to embark on an aggressive campaign in schools, colleges and rural pockets.
