MANGALORE: K. Shamaraya Acharya, an 81-year-old sculptor from Karkala has been chosen for the "Shilp Guru" award. Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, will present the award to him at a function in New Delhi on Saturday. Mr. Acharya is the founding chairman of "Karnataka Rajya Shilpakala Academy". He has also set up the "Vijayashilpa School" at Karkala, and trained nearly 80 sculptors. He has played a major role in preserving and popularising the art, a release said. The 14-ft Asin Mahaveer statue in New Delhi and the 17-ft Chandraprabha Tirtankar statue in Tijar region of Rajasthan, are his creations.
