Bangalore: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) has introduced processor-enabled "smart card" for teachers and students of its affiliated colleges.

The "smart card", which will enable easy access to student details and also allow teachers and students to conduct various transactions, was launched by Secretary for Medical Education M.N. Vidyashankar here on Friday.

The "smart card" has a microprocessor and a memory chip embedded in it and it serves as a one-card identification to access all college departments such as library, hostel, administration, recreation, finance and accounting. Recording of attendance, furnishing details of fee payment and other transactions can be made through the "smart card". The information on the "smart card" includes the name, staff/student identification number and a photo.

The application that is integrated into the smart card is called "smart camplus" — a desktop application that provides a technology framework to control key front-end and back office functions. A huge amount of critical information is handled by this application. An Internet-based version of "smart camplus" called "web camplus," which will provide connectivity between university, colleges and other stakeholders, was also launched. P.S. Prabhakaran, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said the "smart card" would be given to students and teachers in the 630 colleges affiliated to RGUHS.
