NEW DELHI: India and Germany have entered into a tie-up for cooperation in the automobile and fuel sectors. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed here on Saturday between the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). Speaking on the occasion, Heavy Industries Minister, Sontosh Mohan Dev, said Indo-German bilateral trade had been growing and the two countries had already been working together in three other areas and now a fourth joint working group was being added in the automobile sector, which would look into future alternative fuel strategies. Mr. Dev said both countries would work together for better fuel efficiency and pollution norms. He would discuss with the oil ministry the issue of bio-diesel so as to use German technologies for better purification of diesel. Under the terms of the MoU, SIAM and VDA would cooperate in the areas of diesel engine, alternative drives and fuels and for working towards fuel-efficient engines. Stressing on the need for the two countries to cooperate in the development of alternative fuel technologies, Germany's Parliamentary Secretary, Federal Ministry of Transport, Ulrich Kasparick, said cooperation should start right from the research and development at the university level.
