Anti-Chen protest

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: A campaign, called the "Million Voices against Corruption," was launched in Taipei on Saturday to try and "depose" President Chen Shui-bian of Taiwan. The latest protest rally, not formally sponsored by the main Opposition Kuomintang (KMT), was led by Shih Ming-teh, former chairman of Mr. Chen's governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The protest attracted members from both sides of the political divide, according to independent observers. Until nightfall, the rally remained peaceful, even as its organisers hoped to prolong the agitation as a "sit-in" outside the presidential office, aimed at unseating Mr. Chen over an array of allegations of corruption involving him as also his family and close aides. With Mr. Shih, Mr. Chen's one-time mentor, taking the initiative for the campaign, KMT chairman Ma Ying-jeou urged the DPP to "recall" the President and end the escalating crisis. Mr. Chen has often angered China by initiating moves for constitutional changes which it sees as the smokescreen for consolidating Taiwan as an autonomous entity.
