Sharad Pawar launches fisheries board

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar inaugurated here on Saturday the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) which seeks to realise the potential of fisheries through coordination among different agencies and public-private partnership.

Set up with Rs. 2,100-crore budget till 2012, it aims at bringing major activities relating to fisheries and aquaculture for focussed attention and professional management.

Mr. Pawar later said when the country was looking for integration, diversification and value addition in agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture emerged as ideal choices for their compatibility with other farming systems.

"With over 14 million people engaged in different aspects of fisheries, the need of the hour is to address the deficiencies in linkages and build capacity to take care of natural vagaries as well as market fluctuations," he said.
