UDF plea to Achuthanandan

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: United Democratic Front (UDF) convener P.P. Thankachan has urged Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to take steps to allay the fears of the people about the safety of the Mullaperiyar dam, besides thwarting the attempts of the Tamil Nadu Government to raise the storage level to 142 ft.

Mr. Thankachan said the Chief Minister should hold discussions with his Tamil Nadu counterpart.

He said the Government should seek the Prime Minister's intervention in the matter, especially since he was convinced about Kerala's stand.

In another statement, Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy urged Mr. Achuthanandan to initiate measures to end the impasse related to admissions to self-financing professional colleges.

He said the Education Minister's failure to implement the Supreme Court verdict was a serious lapse.

He alleged that the Education Minister's stand that the legal battle should continue had complicated the matter. He said the managements should reach a consensus and solve the problem.

The Cabinet sub-committee had failed to sort out the issue. He said the credibility of the P.A. Mohammed Committee report was being questioned and the Government was trying to force a consensus using the report as a weapon.
