Prajusha closes in on Anju's record

THRISSUR: Around this time last year, M.A. Prajusha had spoken about sacrificing one jump to concentrate on another. But, it looks like the local St. Mary's College student is still battling the cobwebs of confusion.

Her performance at the fourth Trinity Kerala State inter-club athletic championship which ended here on Saturday — golds in both the long and triple jumps — didn't help her either.

"I haven't decided yet", said the 19-year-old at the Corporation Stadium on Saturday. Prajusha is the senior National champion in the long jump but she is yet to cross the six-metre barrier.

She came painfully close to Anju George's under-20 National record in the triple jump, with a powerful 12.81m effort. It was just six centimetres behind Anju's mark and beat the State meet record here by more than a metre.

Kerala's champion school — Kothamangalam's St. George HSS — finished as the State's champion club for the second successive year. "But it's a big struggle running the show, finance is a big problem", said Raju Paul, the school's physical education teacher.

Taking the second place was Kollam's Centralised Sports Hostel which is making some giant strides in throw events, a forgotten section in Kerala athletics a few years ago.
