NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Saturday sealed a prominent showroom -- Jagdish Store -- in Lajpat Nagar III on Ring Road here after the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee found the affidavit submitted by its owner to be "fake". Elsewhere in the Capital, the civic body's squads sealed more than 100 illegal commercial establishments and ongoing unauthorised constructions in different areas. While verifying affidavits submitted by defaulting traders, the Monitoring Committee found that the affidavit submitted by the owner of multi-storey Jagdish Store, claiming that the commercial establishment was running prior to 1962, was false. It immediately issued directions to seal the property for misuse and submission of false affidavit. During the sealing drive, the MCD squads targeted 10 properties in Lajpat Nagar I from where polluting businesses were operating. Similarly, in Najafgarh Zone, eight shops were sealed at Raghu Nagar, Pankha Road and Surya Vihar. In South Zone, the drive was carried out at Safdarjung Enclave, Arjun Nagar and Gautam Nagar where about a dozen shops were sealed, while in Karol Bagh Zone, businesses mainly operating from basements were targeted. The maximum number of illegal shops and ongoing unauthorised constructions were targeted in Rohini Zone where more than 50 shops and properties were targeted -- at Rohini, Pitampura, Kanhaiya Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Tri Nagar, Vishram Nagar, Jai Mata Market and Tarun Enclave. In City Zone, nine properties including an illegal chemical factory were sealed, while in Civil Lines Zone, basements and godowns were targeted for misuse. Similarly, the civic body's encroachment removal drive continued at Seelampur in Shahdara (North) Zone where 157 illegal structures were removed from public land. Meanwhile, all the 184 banquet halls running illegally from residential areas across the city have voluntarily shut down. The drive to seal illegal banquet halls was to begin from September 1 but after requests from residents and banquet hall owners the Monitoring Committee had extended the deadline up to September 7.
