JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Assembly Speaker, Sumitra Singh, has called for a greater role for the legislature in prevention of corruption in public life and establishment of a sensitive and transparent administration. Ms. Singh also said that parliaments around the world could contribute in sustainable development and legislate for checking domestic violence. Addressing a series of workshops in the 52nd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference at Abuja in Nigeria this week-end, Ms. Singh said the parliamentarians should actively participate in debates and contribute to the legislative process to check corruption. According to a release here, she said the members of legislative bodies were expected to raise people's grievances and assess the Government's work in right perspective.
Regular appraisal
The Speaker pointed out that regular appraisal of administrative functioning would strengthen civil liberty and human rights and help evolve a corruption-free system of governance. "The Right to Information Act adopted in India is a milestone in the prevention of corruption in public life,'' she said. Ms. Singh said participation, consensus, accountability, transparency, responsibility and proficiency were some of the factors that could help in providing clean administration in a country.
