Be responsible while covering suicides, media told

Sneha organised a workshop on `Media and Suicide'

CHENNAI:
The media is a risk factor as well as a protective factor when it comes to suicide. So the media's portrayal of suicide is important for its prevention, said Lakshmi Vijayakumar, founder trustee of Sneha, speaking on the eve of the World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10.
A workshop on `Media and Suicide' was organised by Sneha, a voluntary organisation that works with people with suicidal tendencies. It dealt with the coverage of suicides dos and don'ts as well as the implications of suicide news reports.
Dr. Vijayakumar spoke at the inaugural session of the workshop about how media reports influenced the rate of suicides. There have been instances when a celebrity suicide has been followed by more suicides by young people who identify with the celebrity.
Another danger is when a news report gives elaborate details of a suicide.
"Suicide is newsworthy. It has to be published... [But] you must be newsworthy as well as responsible," said Dr. Vijayakumar. She said an example of responsible suicide coverage was the way the media handled Nirvana singer Curt Cobain's death. "The reports focussed on his drug abuse and many problems," she said.
Cartoonist and journalist Madhan, chief guest of the event, inaugurated the event.
