CHENNAI: Carnatica, which has a base in India and the United States, has launched a daylong programme for world peace. The organisation's founders, K.N. Sashikiran and P. Ganesh, held a 24-hour non-stop Carnatic music concert on Saturday in Chennai to celebrate the concept of world peace. They believe that music has the power to unite people.

The singers are attempting a record in classical vocal music. The concert will continue as long as the artists decide to sing. Chitravina Ganesh holds the world record for the longest recital on slide instruments for his 32-hour performance.

The programme also marks the 10th anniversary of the organisation. The effort is dedicated to the victims of man-made and natural disasters in the past few years. The organisation lists, in particular, the 9/11 bomb blast in the United States, the tsunami, earthquakes, the civil war in Lebanon and Sri Lanka, and the bomb attacks in Maharashtra.

The concert began at 8.45 a.m. with the blessings of percussionist Umayalpuram Sivaraman at Carnatica on Arulambal Street in T.Nagar. A number of other artists accompanied the vocalists throughout the day on the ghatam, mridangam, kanjira and violin.

Carnatica will also join the celebrations to be held to mark the World Music Day on September 21 by organising a peace march and an all-faith prayer.
