COIMBATORE: Curious farmers were full of queries on how to use geo membranes to store water in a pond. Another group wanted to know what the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) could do for them. Some more watched with interest the operation of a mechanised coir ratt.

All this at the Agri Intex 2006, an agricultural fair organised by the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association at the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex here. The fair has several technologies, equipment and farming methods that will benefit the farmers.

A stall put up by the ISRO explains how remote sensing data can help in agriculture. Reny Marketing has demonstrated a small pond constructed using geo membrane.

Use of the membrane is cost effective and avoids water pilferage, say the representatives at the stall. Spectra Precision Lasers Private Limited has exhibited a laser guided land leveller.

The Department of Agriculture of Pondicherry has displayed features of its "Uzhavar Udhaviyagam" project.

The exhibits at the Coconut Development Board pavilion include canned tender coconut, cups made from coconut shell and copra dryer.

Visitors can also know more about cultivation of mushroom and sugarcane at the demonstration farms put up at the fair.

Apart from these, the fair also has displays such as pumpsets, seeds, saplings, weighing scales, generators and irrigation equipment.

According to the organisers, the exhibition, which is on till September 13, aims to create awareness among farmers on the new technologies and agriculture-related products.
