THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Government has proposed the takeover of 22 closed tea plantations as part of a package submitted to the Centre for assistance. After discussions with Union Minister for Food and Agriculture Sharad Pawar here on Sunday, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said that the State sought an assistance of Rs.2,253 crore for agriculture development in the State. This was in addition to the Rs.3,412 crore sought as special package for Wayanad, Palakkad, Kasaragod, Idukki and Alappuzha districts. Of the Rs.2,253 crore, Rs.419.25 crore was sought for the takeover of tea plantations by corporations or cooperatives. Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan said that a comprehensive project was proposed for the revival of the plantation sector.
