CUDDALORE: State farmers' wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party has urged the Centre to withdraw the National Seed Act 2004 as it would be detrimental to the interests of the farmers. In a statement released here, State general secretary of the BJP farmers' wing V. Kannan said the Act would impose restrictions on the usage and distribution of traditional seeds that were the mainstay of agriculture. Once implemented, the Act would give leeway to foreign companies to exploit the situation by pushing the biologically manipulated and, pest-and-disease-prone seeds into the Indian markets, thereby putting an end to the unique and time-tested quality seeds of the country. It was the prerogative of the farmers to use the seeds of their own production and in this they would not tolerate any interference from multinational companies. It called upon the Centre to bring about a conducive atmosphere in the farm sector by preserving the seeds native to the soil, Mr Kannan said.
