Bid to subvert move to end graft in TDB: Sudhakaran

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: Minister for Cooperation and Devaswoms G. Sudhakaran has said some quarters are trying to undermine the steps taken by the State Government to end corruption in Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB).

At a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Sudhakaran said the Government was not of the opinion that the TDB was free of corruption. He said the Government ordered a crime branch inquiry into the allegations of corruption raised against the TDB. Mr. Sudhakaran said those who appointed the present office-bearers of the TDB were now raising hue and cry against the board. Their aim was to put the burden of ills in TDB on the shoulders of the CPI(M). That would not succeed, said Mr. Sudhakaran.

The Minister said the existing laws did not permit the interference of Government on issues related to the TDB and new laws should be enacted for the purpose. He said he would forward some suggestions to the LDF on the enactment of a new law and it was for the LDF to take a final decision on the issue. Mr. Sudhakaran said the most important issue at present was to protect the interest of genuine devotees and to ensure transparency in the administration of the TDB.

Mr. Sudhakaran said Cultural Affairs Minister M.A. Baby would dedicate to the State the Takazhi Sivasankara Pillai Memorial on the premises of Sankaramangalam House, the home of the late writer at a function on September 12 at 2.30 p.m. Mr. Baby would also unveil a statue of Takazhi Sivasankara Pillai installed there. Mr. Sudhakaran would preside over the function.
