THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Not to be outdone in the technological race, the State Institute of Educational Technology in association with IT@School, a project under the Directorate of Public Instruction, is coming up with the idea of a `Parallel Internet' for students in all the Government and aided schools in the State. "It is our dream project," says Babu Sebastian, director. An `Eduserver,' which functions as an information hub will provide the necessary subject related material to students of each class according to their requirement. "This is a long-term project and considerable amount of planning is required. It will take at least two years to glean sufficient educational material from the Internet for setting up the Eduserver," says Mr. Sebastian. Discussions are currently on to set up the Eduserver, he says. Plans are also afoot to launch an educational portal that promises to provide A to Z information on general education. The project, proposed to be introduced in three phases, will provide an overview of the educational situation at the State, National and International level. "The concept of teachers as the providers of knowledge has changed. Today students themselves seek and gain knowledge with the aid of technology. It is time we acknowledge this reality," says Mr. Sebastian. - S.K.
