On the 108th birth anniversary of the writer

CHENNAI: The Kalki Krishnamurthy Memorial Trust honoured two young artists with awards on the occasion of the 108th birth anniversary of the writer on Saturday.

N. Murali, Music Academy president and Managing Director of The Hindu, presented the awards to vocalist Savitha Narasimhan and percussionist J. Vaidyanathan.

Recalling Kalki's life and contribution to art and literature, Mr. Murali described him as a "giant among Tamil writers." Apart from being a writer, Kalki was also a freedom fighter, social reformer, art patron and journalist.

"He campaigned for literacy and wrote against child marriage. I am glad that the third generation of his family is carrying out his lofty ideals," Mr. Murali said.

Kalki's son, K. Rajendran, managing trustee of the memorial trust, brought back memories of his father by narrating anecdotes.
