Anantapur
Staff Reporter
ANANTAPUR: The district unit of the Communist Party of India on Saturday staged a protest in front of the Collectorate demanding the State and Central Governments to declare Anantapur as drought-hit district. When party leaders led by district secretary M.V. Ramana tried to gate-crash into the Collectorate, where the plenary session on social audit of NREGS was in progress, the police arrested about 30 activists. About half them were released and allowed to meet Union Minister for Rural Development Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, later. In their representation to the Union Minister after the plenary session, the CPI urged the Centre to ensure 200 days of wage employment to each household under NREGS, minimum wages of Rs. 100 per day, action against those responsible for irregularities and recovery of money from the concerned, keeping in view the severity of drought conditions.
