Two women washed away in Malaprabha

BIJAPUR: Two women were washed away in Malaprabha river in Badami taluk of Bagalkot district on Saturday.

They were identified as Parvatavva Horkeri (45) and Mudukavva Rotti (50) of Danakashirur village in Badami taluk.

The two women, working in an agriculture field at Cholachagudda village on the other side of the river, were returning home after the day's work. They began to wade through waist deep water but could not withstand the current. The body of Parvatavva has been recovered and search is on for the other body, according to Bagalkot police. — Staff Correspondent

Yediyurappa opens JSS kendra in U.S.

BANGALORE: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa inaugurated the Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara Adhyatmika Kendra at Gaithersburg, U.S., on September 4, and said such efforts go a long way in keeping non-resident Indian rooted in their culture.

Mr. Yediyurappa, who has been visiting the U.S. where he attended the international Kannada conference organised by AKKA, also spoke about the State's new industrial policy and the potential it had for people from Karnataka and the country living in the U.S.

No meat sale on Krishna Jayanthi

Bangalore: In view of Krishna Jayanthi on September 14, the Government has banned the slaughter of animals and sale of meat. Slaughter of animals will be allowed till 8 a.m. on September 13. The ban will be in force till 5 a.m. on September 15, an official release said. — Staff Reporter

Aerospace information room opened

Bangalore: An aerospace information room was inaugurated at the Air Force Technical College here on Sunday by Air Marshal B.N. Gokhale, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Training Command, Indian Air Force.

The IAF, in its quest to exploit aerospace as a weapons platform, had embarked upon setting up an aerospace faculty at the AFTC to impart training on aerospace technologies to engineering officers. — Staff Reporter

JNNURM: protest planned

HUBLI: JNNURM and Kalasa-Banduri Nala Project Implementation Action Committee has decided to block the national highway at Gabbur Cross near Hubli on September 24, if the State Government failed to forward the proposal regarding the inclusion of Hubli-Dharwad under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to the Union Government immediately.

A resolution to this effect was approved at the preliminary meeting of the action committee here on Sunday.The meeting decided to hold a token hunger strike in front of the tahsildar's office in Hubli on September 15 and a submit a memorandum. It decided to hold a motorcycle rally on September 23. — Staff Correspondent

Tribute to Steve Irwin

Udupi: Members of the Artists Forum of Udupi paid a special tribute to Steve Irwin by carving out a crocodile in the sand at the Malpe beach here on Sunday. Irwin died while shooting for a wildlife film.

People who visited Malpe beach also saw the crocodile carved in the sand. Since it was a Sunday, the number of people coming to the beach was more than usual. The crocodile carved in the sand was the cynosure of all eyes. — Staff Correspondent

Two struck by lightning

Udupi: A person was killed when he was struck by lightning at Kallotti near Pervaje under Karkala Town police station limits on Sunday.

The Karkala town police have identified him as Gopal (45). A case has been registered.

Another person Mahabala Naik (59) was killed on Saturday when he was struck by lightning at Sauda near Jannady in Kundapur taluk. Naik was a farmer. — Staff Correspondent

Bandh in Belur

HASSAN: The bandh in Belur town in the district on Sunday was total and peaceful. The bandh was in response to a call given by Sangh Parivar in protest against the damage to the shelter of a local temple on Friday night. According to police, some miscreants damaged the shelter at Anjaneyaswami temple in Lakshmipura extension in the town. Business establishments were closed. Four persons were arrested in connection with the incident, police said. — Staff Correspondent

Condemned

HUBLI: Dharwad North MP Pralhad Joshi has condemned the bomb blasts at Malegaon in Maharashtra and alleged that apathy of the Maharashtra Government towards containing terrorist activities has led to the disaster. In a press release issued here, Mr. Joshi has questioned the efficiency of Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and urged the Union Government to strengthen the legal set up for taking stringent action against those involving in terrorist activities. — Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Writer Yandamoori Veerendranath has underscored the need for recreation and innovativeness for achieving success. Inaugurating the gymkhana and extra curricular activities of Sri Kadasiddheshwar Arts and H.S. Two peacocks adopted

MYSORE: Two peacocks of Mysore Zoo have been adopted by two residents of the city for a period of one year under the Adoption of Animals scheme. According to a statement, W. Sahadev, a resident of Hebbal II stage, and S. Sahan Alva, a resident of Kuvempunagar, have adopted two peacocks for a period of one year by paying Rs. 3,000 each as adoption fee. A resident of Tumkur has adopted two small birds by paying Rs 1,000. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested

MYSORE: Eight persons have been arrested by the Jayapura Police in Mysore taluk on charges of stealing electric cables. About 250 kg of aluminium cables worth Rs 30,000 and a bicycle had been recovered from them. The police said that they came to know about the gang's activities when one of them, Rangaswamy, was trying sell a stolen bicycle. He said he and six othershad been involved in stealing electric cables. A resident of Kesare in Mysore Sameer Khan, who was buying the stolen goods, was arrested. — Staff Correspondent

Appointed

Belgaum: Raghavendra Pujar, a social worker devoted to the cause of mentally challenged persons in and around Belgaum district, has been appointed Director of Special Olympics Bharat-Karnataka. According to a press release, Mr. Pujar, who runs an association for the development and welfare of the mentally challenged children in the field of sports and skill development, has been instrumental in getting 150 medals at zonal level sports competitions for such children held in Hubli in 2004. — Staff Correspondent
