NEW DELHI: Eminent Odissi dancer and Padmashri awardee Ranjana Gauhar enthralled the audiences when she presented an Odissi dance recital based on her new choreographic composition in a programme titled "Sanchari -- The essence of abhinaya in Odissi dance''. Held at the India Habitat Centre here on Thursday, the dance recital was based on poetry, from the classical to the modern, in which Ranjana explored the essence and aroma of `abhinaya' deeply embedded and concealed in the poetry of great poets. Despite the long gap of time between the ancient poets and their modern counterparts, the recital tried to depict that there was a common bonding of human experiences, sentiments and concepts that run as a thread from the old to the new in the creations. The recital showed how these points of relevance inspired Ranjana to select some of the stalwarts from Sanskrit and Hindi literature. Through this presentation Ranjana once again elucidated the fact that poets like Nandikeshwara, Kalidas, Jaidev, Vidyapati and Kavi Kalicharan Pattnaik are timeless and evergreen. She brought forward some of their exceptional masterpieces: Abhinaya Darpan of Nandikeshwara, Ritusamhara of Kalidas, Geet Govindam of Jaidev, and Vidyapati's poem in the form of a riddle and Kalicharan Pattnaik's most popular song in thumri style. The performance was exclusive and a rare combination of poems from different times and was a delight and feast for the audience.
