KATHMANDU: Floods and mudslides have killed 10 persons in the central part of Nepal during the past 24 hours. Six of a family died in Rishing, 150 km from Kathmandu, when a mudslide swept away their house. Two more died in a neighbouring village in floods. Similarly, two persons were swept away by a swelling river in Hetuda, 200 km from Kathmandu. At least six persons have been reported missing in different districts in the central region, which has been experiencing incessant rain for the past 48 hours. The rain has flooded villages and towns, displacing hundreds of families. Meanwhile, the Government appointed as Army Chief Lt. General Rukmangat Katuwal, who has been serving as the acting Army Chief. On Sunday, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala affixed the insignia on Lt. Gen. Katuwal's shoulder straps, officially making him head of the 92,000-plus army.
