Crime rate under control in Hassan, says range IGP

Staff Correspondent

`Law and order situation satisfactory this year'

  • Police get three jeeps and two motorcycles for 24-hour patrolling of city
  • Accident-prone spots on NH-48 between Channarayapatna and Hassan identified
  • Steps being taken to prevent accidents

HASSAN: The law and order situation in the district this year is satisfactory and crime rate is under control, Inspector General of Police (Southern Range), R.P. Sharma, has said.

Mr. Sharma visited Hassan on Sunday to review the work of district police. He told presspersons that Mahamastakabhisheka ceremony was held successfully and peacefully, because of foolproof security arrangements by Hassan police.

    Security arrangements

During this year, the Chief Minister visited the district 10 times and the police had made proper security arrangements, he said. While police registered 4,301 cases in 2004, the cases registered during 2005 were 4,129. A total of 2,811 cases was registered till August 31, 2006.

A total of 205 fatal and 978 non-fatal accidents were reported till August end and over 245 people were killed and 1,810 injured, he noted.

Maximum number of fatal and non-fatal accidents occurred on National Highway-48, between Channarayapatna and Hassan. The accident-prone spots on this road were identified and corrective measures including widening of road and cutting branches and trees had been initiated. The 40-km stretch between Arsikere and Tiptur also proved dangerous for motorists "as the road had been laid till the base of the trees and accidents occurred at many places, as vehicles hit the trees", he said.

    Erratic driving

A total of 11,729 cases were booked against drivers for erratic and drunken driving till August end and levied spot fine to the tune of Rs. 12.08 lakh. Modern gadgets such as radar gun and breathanalyser were being used to book cases against reckless drivers. As many as 28 cases were booked under the Gambling Act during the year, as against 32 cases booked during the previous year and 35 cases during 2004, he said.

    Patrol

During the current year, 2,308 petty cases were booked as against 2,584 cases for the previous year and 3,495 cases in 2004. To combat crime and maintain law and order, three Garuda jeeps and two motorcycles were provided in Hassan city to patrol the city round the clock. Similarly, Garuda vans and motorcycles were being provided for Arsikere and Holenarsipur sub-divisions to attend to emergency calls in the respective jurisdictions.

One striking force each had been stationed at sub-divisional headquarters in Hassan, Holenarsipur and Arsikere to deal with law and order problems, he said.

He said two police officers from Hassan district had been named for President's medal.
