Seminar also held on role of engineers in natural disaster management

TIRUPATI: A painting contest and a family quiz on Sunday marked the end of the two-day competitions conducted by the Regional Science Centre (RSC) in connection with Engineers' Day.

The day is observed on September 15 every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of renowned engineer Sir Mokshagundam Visveswaraiah and the science centre, which is working under National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), decided to conduct the competitions in association with Institution of Engineers' Tirupati local centre.

A major draw

The painting contest on the theme `Engineers at work' conducted for school children (from LKG to X class) turned out to be a major draw with a number of students taking part. The students gave a free hand to their brush, working wonders on the canvas. The paintings showed civil engineers involved in road, irrigation project work, electronic engineers working on computers and chemical engineers in laboratories.

A family quiz on general science was also conducted later, in which the children were accompanied by their family members.

A seminar was conducted on `Role of engineers in natural disaster mitigation and management' on Saturday, in which teams of college students gave a six-minute Powerpoint presentation each on how to detect, avert and overcome disasters and extend rehabilitation to victims.

The project coordinator of the centre K. Madangopal said that prizes would be distributed to winners at the Engineers' Day celebration to be held on September 15.
