Satellite Interactive Terminals to be set up

MADURAI: The Directorate of Public Health will install Satellite Interactive Terminals (SIT) at Health Department offices in all districts to strengthen surveillance system for communicable diseases.

These SITs will come up at the offices of Deputy Director for Health Services in district headquarters under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme.

S. Elango, Joint Director of Public Health, said the terminals would be installed soon and once they were in place, the Directorate could be in constant touch with districts for emergency cases, Dr. Elango said. — Staff Reporter

Prizes for Bharatidasan song contest

CHENNAI: Winners of contests on Bharatidasan's songs for school and college students will receive prizes from Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at a function in Kancheepuram on September 15.

Organised by the Murasoli Trust and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's literary wing, the last rounds of the contest for the school and college students took place in Chennai on September 8 and 9 respectively. While V. Archana of Ramakrishna Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thuraimangalam, Perambalur district, came first in the school-level contest, K. Nitya of Bishop Heber College, Tiruchi, topped in the college-level competition. Besides, eight students have been chosen for other slots. — Special Correspondent

UNLF leader airlifted

Coimbatore: Khundongbam Tomba (55), leader of the banned United National Liberation Front (UNLF), and his lieutenant Salam Pung, who were arrested in Coimbatore on September 5, were airlifted to Manipur by a special Defence aircraft on Sunday morning.

The UNLF leader had undergone post-surgical care after surgery for two compressions in spinal cord.

Plans to get the duo airlifted to Manipur got delayed owing to some procedural formalities, Union Home Ministry sources said.

After completing the procedural formalities, a special defence aircraft arrived at the Peelamedu airport in the morning. — Staff Reporter

Doctors to honour Karunanidhi

TIRUCHI: The Doctors' Association for Social Equality (DASE) will organise a felicitation function for Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and also a Social Justice Conference at Madurai on October 7.

Over 1,000 doctors from Maharashtra and Delhi would participate in both functions, DASE general secretary G.R. Ravindranath told presspersons here on Sunday.

The felicitation function is to thank the Chief Minister for making permanent the doctors appointed on contract basis as well as for his various announcements connected with Health Department including the establishment of medical colleges in all district headquarters, upgrading of Rajaji Government Hospital in Madurai, formation of a Pharma Park at Nanguneri etc.

Dr. Ravindranath said Dr. Vasantha Kandasamy, who was recently honoured with the State Government's Kalpana Chawla Award, would inaugurate the Social Justice conference. — Staff Reporter

CUDDALORE: Annamalai University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Telecommunication Management, Delhi, to offer B.B.A and M.B.A (Telecom management) courses through the distance education mode.

Rain lashes Kanyakumari district

Nagercoil : Various parts of the district continued to receive heavy rain for the third day on Sunday.

The maximum amount of rainfall of 44.4 mm was recorded at Pechipparai followed by 36.5 in Puthalam, 36.4 in Perunchani, 14.9 in Kannimar, 12 in Myladi, 9.3 in Nagercoil, 8.2 in Aralvoimozhi and 3.4 in Kottaram.

The level in Pechipparai stood at 30.45 feet against the total capacity of 48 feet, 36.75 feet in Perunchani against the total capacity of 77 feet, 5.02 feet in Chittar I against the total capacity of 18 feet and 5.12 feet in Chittar II against the total capacity of 18 feet.

Worker stabbed to death

Nagercoil : An unidentified gang stabbed a coolie to death on Sunday.

According to the police, they recovered the body of David of Swamiyarmadam with multiple cut injuries from a coconut grove at Vandipurai near Swamiyarmadam.

The police have registered a case.

Shops gutted

Nagercoil : The police are on the lookout for some unidentified persons who set ablaze a stage at Monday Market on Saturday night, where cadres of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam planned to organise a public meeting on Sunday.

According to the police, two more shops were gutted.

Two killed in accident

VIRUDHUNAGAR : Two persons were killed when two lorries collided on the Madurai-Tuticorin Road at Aruppukottai in the district on Sunday. According to the police, a coal-laden lorry bound for Andhra Pradesh from Tuticorin rammed a stationary lorry. While the driver of the speeding lorry, T. Sathyanarayana (35), died on the spot, the cleaner of the stationary lorry, K. Munusamy (40), who was attending to a minor repair, died on the way to a nearby hospital. — Staff Reporter

Heavy rain

ERODE: A few trees were uprooted in Kodivery on Saturday night following heavy rain and gale.

An uprooted tamarind tree affected traffic on Athani Main Road. Bhavani recorded 52 mm of rainfall; Dharapuram - 35 mm; Kangeyam - 23.6 mm; Moolanur - 21 mm; Gobichettipalayam - 16 mm; Erode - 15 mm; Perundurai - 12 mm and Sathyamangalam and Bhavanisagar 11 mm each. - Staff Reporter

Training programme held on milk products

PUDUKOTTAI: A one-day training programme on "preparation of milk products" was organised at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Vamban Colony in the district recently.

As many as 45 farm women were imparted training on various milk products preparation.

Collectors discuss free land scheme

TIRUCHI: Collectors of Tiruchi, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Karur, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam and officials of various departments discussed the modalities of implementing land for the landless scheme in Tiruchi on Sunday.

The meeting was convened by the Commissioner, Agricultural Production, Surjit K. Chaudhary.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 111.20 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 9,047 cusecs and outflow, 8,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
