Restore rotation system for Chennai Mayor post: IUML

Special Correspondent

Tie-up with DMK, allies will continue for local body polls

  • The system was aimed at providing opportunity to different communities
  • Appeals to Government to revive satellite town proposal

CHENNAI: K.M.Khader Mohideen, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) State unit president, on Sunday urged the Government to restore the rotation system for the post of Mayor of Chennai.

He told reporters here the system, which was in vogue several years ago, was aimed at providing an opportunity for different communities including the minorities and the Scheduled Castes to occupy the prestigious post.

The party welcomed the Government's decision to do away with direct elections for the post of Mayors and Chairpersons of Municipalities, he said, pleading for the re-introduction of the rotation system for the Mayor's post. To start with, the system should be restored in Chennai and it could be gradually extended to other corporations in the State, he added.

Asking the State Government to revive its satellite town proposal, he said such towns should be created for all the other major cities in the State.

Mr. Mohideen said the IUML's electoral understanding with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its allies would continue for the local body elections also.

    To seek 10% of seats

The party would stake claim for 10 per cent of the total seats. Providing efficient local governance and enhancing infrastructure facilities would be the main focus in the local body poll, he added.

The party would continue with its efforts to promote communal harmony through inter-faith dialogue and unity yatras, he said, adding that as many as 12,000 jamaats in the State would strive for preventing escalation of communal violence.
