Suman shines

Principal Correspondent

HYDERABAD: It was a day to remember for T. Suman as Test star and captain V.V.S. Laxman along with his teammates gave him a standing ovation on completing an impressive century (100, 159b, 13x4, 1x6) which helped Hyderabad post 328 for nine in 90 overs against Tripura on the first day of the three-day all-India Moin-ud-Dowla Gold Cup invitation cricket tournament quarterfinal at the Gymkhana here on Sunday.

Suman played to his potential for the second time this season to get a ton (the first hundred had come in the KSCA all-India tournament in Bangalore recently ).

Picking the gaps well and executing inside-out strokes to perfection, Suman held the centre-stage in the company of southpaw Sashank Nag (36, 114b, 3 x 4) during the 137-run opening stand in 41 overs.

Suman was never nervous as he approached the three-figure mark and even walked down to hit a straight six off left-arm spinner Tushar Saha. But he perished immediately after scoring a century, failing to check his intended off-drive.

Incidentally it was a memorable day for the young Tushar too as he had earlier removed V.V.S. Laxman (five)..

Later it was the turn of A.mbati T.irupati Rayudu, back to Hyderabad after a one-season stint with Andhra, to dazzle briefly during his breezy 28 (41b, 4x4, 1x6) before he was deceived in flight and was caught and bowled by Rajib Saha.

The scores (first day):

At Gymkhana: Hyderabad 328 for nine in 90 overs (T. Suman 100, N. Arjun Yadav 44, Ibrahim Khaleel 48, Rajib Saha four for 67) vs Tripura.

At Uppal Stadium: Karnataka 201 in 64.5 overs (Yere Goud 47 not out, Satish six for 47) vs Chemplast 47 without loss in 10 overs.

At NFC: TNCA Colts 290 in 80.1 overs (S. Anirudha 60, R. Srinivasan 75, K. Gopinath 53, Sree Kumar four for 76, S. Suresh Kumar four for 73) vs India Cements 13 for two in 10 overs.

AT RRC-I: Mumbai 202 in 79 overs (Abhijit Shetye 45, Prashant Naik 41, Wasim Jaffer 40, Ashwin Yadav four for 56) vs Railways 21 for one in 11 overs.
