THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister P. K. Sreemathi has warned of strong action if Government doctors continued their agitation. The Health Minister said that the campaign of Kerala Government Medical Officers Association to justify their non-cooperation, that their pay scales were curtailed, was intended to mislead the public. Assistant surgeons had the highest pay scale among those entering service in gazetted posts (Rs. 11,910-19,350) whereas the scales of pay of assistant engineers and agricultural officers entering service were Rs.11,050-18,450. "The doctors get the scale of civil surgeon grade (Rs.16,650-23,200) on the completion of eight years and they get promotions in the ratio of 1:3. No other gazetted officer gets this benefit." Ms. Sreemathi added there was no ground in comparing the posts of assistant and civil surgeons with those of Under Secretary, Deputy Secretary and Additional Secretary. Those were promotional posts given to persons with many years of service. It was also wrong to say that the Government had not held talks with the doctors. Six rounds of talks were held and the Government accepted all their demands except those pertaining to the pay scales.
