THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has demanded that farmers be sanctioned interest-free loans to help them tide over the agriculture crisis. In a memorandum submitted to Union Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Sharad Pawar, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said that financial assistance and free seeds and manures must be provided to the farmers to restart agricultural operations. Financial assistance should also be provided to the families of the farmers who had committed suicide. Mr. Chennithala also demanded that Alappuzha and Idukki districts be included in the proposed agriculture package. Irrigation facilities should be improved in all the five districts. Crop insurance must be extended to coconut, pepper, cardamom, vanilla and other crops. Delays in payment of compensation should be avoided. He said all small-scale loans should be written off, especially loans taken from scheduled and nationalised banks. Price stabilisation fund might be popularised and knowledge centres set up in the villages. The Congress leader said that of the 507 farmers who had committed suicides, 37 had embraced death in the last three months. This showed the dimension of the problem. Farmers, who carried on their agricultural operations by borrowing from banks, cooperative societies and moneylenders, could not repay the loans. The lenders resorted to coercive measures to recover their dues.
