KOTTAYAM: The State executive committee of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chaired by party leader Sharad Pawar has decided to go ahead with the move to bring in the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) [DIC-K] into its fold, it is learnt. The meeting held at a private tourist resort at Kumarakom on Sunday began at 6.45 p.m. and lasted till 8 pm. While no official statement was issued after the meeting, sources within the party said the focus of Sunday's meeting was an assessment by Mr. Pawar of the situation within the State unit and explaining the position within the Left Democratic Front (LDF). All senior leaders of the party gave their views at the meeting. It is learnt that opposition to the move was feeble. The party leadership is confident that the opposition from within the LDF too would die down in the coming days. The discussions on merger are expected to gather momentum after the national conference of the party scheduled on September 16 and 17 in Dehradun. All executive committee members, including NCP State president Cyriac John, the former Minister A.C. Shunmughadas and A.K. Saseendran, MLA, were present at the meeting.
