THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Visitors to writer Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai's home in Alappuzha district, converted into a museum after his death in 1999, would now be greeted by the author himself beginning Tuesday. A six-foott tall bronze statue of a smiling Thakazhi would be unveiled in the courtyard of the home on the day. The statue, done by Kunnuvila M. Murali, a former lecturer at the College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram, would be erected on a 7.25- feet pedestal. The State Government had taken over the writer's home and converted it into a museum in 2001. The statue of a Thakazhi wears his trademark single-layer dhoti and half-shirt with a book in hand and his pen and spectacle box in his pocket. Thakazhi, one of the finest writers in Malayalam, almost comes alive in the statue, weighing about one tonne, with the sculpture recreating such details as the mole on the right corner of his upper lip and the creases on his dhoti and shirt. Culture Minister M.A. Baby will unveil the statue on Tuesday.
Memorial column
The Minister will also decclare open the memorial column, built according to traditional architectural principles, at a function to be chaired by Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran. The Department of Archaeology spent Rs.12 lakhs for the statue and the memorial column and for landscaping of the courtyard.
